GUIDE

The best time for a Kenya safari

Short answer: June to October and January to March. But every month has something to offer, and the quieter months can be the best value.

Kenya’s seasons at a glance

  • January to March: dry and warm. Excellent game viewing, fewer vehicles than peak season, and calving season in the south of the ecosystem.
  • April and May: the long rains. Green landscapes, lower prices and fewer visitors. Some roads and camps can be affected.
  • June to October: dry season and the Great Migration. Kenya’s peak season, with wildebeest herds in the Masai Mara from about July to October.
  • November and early December: the short rains. Short afternoon showers, lush scenery and good prices.

Which month is best for you?

  • For the Great Migration: August and September give the best chance of river crossings.
  • For value: April, May and November have the lowest prices.
  • For photography: the dry months, when animals gather around water and the light is clear.
  • For Kilimanjaro views in Amboseli: the dry months, early in the morning.

Wildlife is resident in Kenya’s parks all year, so there is no bad month for a safari.
