KENYA DESTINATIONS
Nairobi National Park
The only national park inside a capital city: lions, rhinos, giraffes and buffalo with Nairobi’s skyline on the horizon.
Why go
Nairobi National Park is a surprisingly wild park on the edge of the city, and one of the best places in Kenya to see rhinos. It is perfect for a first game drive, a layover, or a final morning before your flight.
- Black and white rhinos
- Lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and ostriches
- Nearby: the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage
When to go
All year. Early morning is best for animal activity.
Getting there and how long to stay
About 20 minutes from central Nairobi and close to the airport. A half day is enough for most visitors.

Half day or full day?
- Half day (about 4–5 hours): an early-morning game drive, ideal before a flight or on arrival day.
- Full day: more time to find rhinos and lions, with a picnic lunch, or combined with nearby attractions.
All our Nairobi National Park safaris are private, in a Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and a driver-guide, with pick-up from your hotel or the airport. See the Nairobi National Park day trip.
What makes this park special
Established in 1946, Nairobi National Park was Kenya’s first national park. Its open plains, forest and river valleys are home to one of the country’s most important rhino populations, as well as lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos and hundreds of bird species.
Seeing a rhino with skyscrapers in the background is a moment unique to Nairobi.
Combine it with
- The Giraffe Centre: meet endangered Rothschild’s giraffes up close.
- The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: watch orphaned baby elephants at their daily visiting hour (advance booking required).
- Karen Blixen Museum: the former home of the author of Out of Africa.
